Once a thriving hotspot, the Windsor Park Mall in San Antonio, Texas, had fallen in to disrepair, was closed down and left deserted. Meanwhile, Rackspace, a rapidly emerging tech firm in the same city, was in urgent need of larger space for their rapidly growing company. They saw potential in the vacant mall and hired Childress Engineering as consultants to evaluate its structural suitability for conversion into a corporate hub.
Following an exhaustive examination, the Childress team confirmed the building was structurally sound and proposed an innovative design concept to transform it. Rackspace was captivated by our vision and appointed us as the production architect to execute the transformation.
The project drew upon the expertise of three CES divisions – Structural, Architectural, and Curtainwall. Together, they transformed the dilapidated mall into a state-of-the-art headquarters for Rackspace. The crown jewel of this architectural marvel is a stone wall and canopy structure gracing the entrance, a testament to the innovative spirit that drove the project. This endeavor showcases how creative engineering can repurpose old spaces to meet the demands of today’s dynamic tech industry.

The expertise of the Childress Engineering team was sought to tackle a complex issue at the Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. The hospital was struggling with persistent water infiltration, and despite hiring multiple consultants, a viable solution had not been found.
Upon our analysis, we discovered that the problems were far more extensive than initially anticipated. The entire facade was compromised and ultimately needed a complete replacement. However, the challenge was that the hospital had to remain operational during the repairs.
As a team, we devised an innovative strategy. We proposed to scaffold the building and create a protective screen, ensuring that the remediation process could proceed without hindering the hospital’s functionality or compromising the privacy of its occupants. But we didn’t stop there; we also suggested not just removing the damaged, leaking facade but replacing it with a modern, aesthetically pleasing one.
The severity of the leakage problem led to legal complications. Fortunately, our involvement and successful resolution of the issue helped diffuse these legal concerns. We successfully restored and repaired the building, but instead of merely replicating what was there before, we gave it a new life with a fresh, modern facade.
Our team, comprising of Structural Engineers, Consultants, Architects, and Curtainwall divisions, all collaborated on this project, showcasing our collective skills and expertise. It’s projects like these that remind us why we do what we do, and we take immense pride in the transformation we achieved at the Scott & White Hospital.

The Childress Engineering Consultants were brought in to deal with a unique challenge. Royal Central Tower, a building boasting a beautiful interior but suffering from an aging exterior, had been severely damaged by a tornado. Our task was not only to assist the owner in negotiating a successful resolution with their insurance company for facade replacement but also to revamp the building to give it a fresh, modern look, all while staying under budget.
We proposed an innovative solution – to place a new ‘skin’ on the building, effectively increasing its footprint. This meant completely overhauling the exterior while leaving the interior largely untouched. The process was complex, requiring careful removal of the old glass from the interior, predominantly during night hours to avoid disrupting the tenants.
Our team worked tirelessly, ensuring that the tenants could continue their daily activities without interruption throughout the entire transformation process. The result was astounding – the building looked brand new, and we managed to save our client millions of dollars in the process.
Looking at the revitalized Royal Central Tower now, it’s hard to believe that it was once an aging structure hit by a tornado. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved – a testament to our commitment to innovative solutions, impeccable execution, and client satisfaction.
